Heat Transfer and Structural Load Simulations using ABAQUS FEA and MATLAB Finite Element Program

Temperature and Heat Flux Analysis

  • Cross-section of a ceramic square block with side 1000 mm consisting of 5 nuclear rods with diameter 70 mm

  • Nuclear rods' decay results in constant heat flux of 20 kW/m^2, thermal conductivity of ceramic = 17 W/m-K, convective heat transfer coefficient on outer boundary = 10 W/m^2-K

  • MATLAB Finite Element Program and ABAQUS temperature and heat flux results compared in the ceramic housing

  • Mesh variations include: 3-node triangle | 6-node triangle | 4-node quadrilateral For mesh element sizes 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mm

Temperature - Tensile Stress - Displacement Analysis

  • Coupled Temperature-Displacement Steady State Solution.

  • Current of 400 Amp flows through 25mm long Aluminum tapered rod

  • Fixed ends maintained at 20ºC with electrical resistance of the aluminum (ρe = 2.65×10-8 Ω⋅m)

  • Comparing analytical and FEA Solutions using MATLAB Finite Element Program and AbaqusCAE

  • Mesh elements variations: 2 and 4 node with Linear & Quadratic methods
