Mechanical Design Engineer, Vera C. Rubin Observatory

Sept. 2023 - Present

  • FEA optimization of 3.42m & 8.4m telescope mirrors, correcting optical deformation caused by Zernike modes.

  • FEA structural analysis to ensure stress safety limits of optics support systems under static and dynamic loading conditions.

  • Developed rapid feedback methods using FEA and statistical analysis to evaluate stress and corrective actuator forces for optics.

  • Executed detailed design and documentation of telescope support structures using SolidWorks PDM and ANSI Y14.5 GD&T standards.

  • Calculated flow rates, head losses, and thermal loads for HVAC systems supporting three chillers rated at 203 kW each.

  • Designed and analyzed 70kW backup cooling system for a data center, including detailed pipe sizing and head-loss assessments.

  • Installed and tested of a vacuum lifting fixture for the integration of a 16-ton, 8.4m M1M3 mirror and support cell.

  • Delivered technical reviews, installation procedures, project proposals, and conducted vendor bid evaluations.

  • Extensive on-site experience performing engineering tasks at observatory facilities in Chile, at elevations up to 8,900 feet.
